How to Grow Dwarf Umbrella Tree from Seed
Heptapleurum arboricola
Begin with a seed. Discover the beauty of growing a tree, one small step at a time.
The Dwarf Umbrella Tree, Heptapleurum arboricola, is an evergreen shrub also widely known as Schefflera arboricola, the name used in our seed-growing instructions. It is admired for its glossy, umbrella-like clusters of leaflets. Native to Taiwan and Hainan, it can grow into a substantial shrub or small tree in nature.
Its tolerance of indoor conditions and relatively low humidity makes it a popular choice for bonsai. Growing from seed gives you the chance to follow its development from the beginning; first focus on germination, healthy roots, and steady growth.
01 — MEET YOUR TREE
Meet Your Tree
The Dwarf Umbrella Tree is an evergreen shrub in the Araliaceae family. In its native habitat of Taiwan and Hainan, it grows in rainforests below approximately 900 metres and can reach around 8–9 metres in height.
Its glossy compound leaves have several leaflets arranged like the ribs of an umbrella. The plant is valued for its adaptability to indoor conditions, including low to moderate light and relatively dry air.
As your tree grows, allow it to build strength before beginning detailed pruning or wiring. A healthy root system and steady growth are the foundation of future bonsai development.

When to Start Growing
Spring generally offers favourable conditions for seed germination, thanks to longer daylight hours and warmer temperatures. However, you can start your seeds indoors at other times of the year, provided you maintain suitable light, warmth, and moisture. Keep in mind that limited daylight and cooler conditions may slow germination and early growth.
03 — PREPARE YOUR SEEDS
Prepare Your Seeds
No Pre-Treatment Required
Dwarf Umbrella seeds do not require cold stratification. The growing instructions do not include warm-water soaking or scarification. Once your pot and growing medium are prepared, you can sow the seeds directly.
04 — PLANT YOUR SEEDS
Plant Your Seeds
Step 1 — Prepare the Growing Medium
Place the included coco coir growing block in a container and gradually add water until it has fully expanded. Gently loosen the hydrated coir to create an even, loose texture. It should be moist but not waterlogged.
Helpful Tip: For improved aeration and drainage, you can optionally mix a small amount of horticultural perlite into the hydrated coco coir.
Step 2 — Prepare the Pots
Fill a biodegradable peat pot with the prepared growing medium, leaving a little space at the top. Keep the coir loose and avoid compressing it.
Important: Coco coir retains moisture but provides very few nutrients. Do not apply fertilizer during seed preparation or germination. Wait until your seedlings are established and actively growing before introducing suitable plant nutrition.
Step 3 — Sow the Seeds
Place the seeds on the surface of the growing medium, spacing them apart where possible. Cover them with approximately 5 mm of medium.
Step 4 — Water Thoroughly
Water immediately after sowing. Continue until the growing medium is thoroughly saturated and water begins to drain from the container. Allow excess water to drain away freely.
Step 5 — Add the Propagation Bag
Place a transparent propagation bag over the pot to help retain humidity. Make several small air holes in the sides to allow airflow.
Check the growing medium and bag regularly. Keep the medium moist, not waterlogged, and increase ventilation if excessive condensation or mould appears.
Step 6 — Choose a Warm, Bright Location
Place the pot in a warm location with plenty of direct sunlight or in a greenhouse. Our general growing guidance recommends 20–30°C (68–86°F) for germination and 8–12 hours of light daily, with a suitable grow light as an alternative or supplement.
A clear propagation bag can trap heat in direct sunlight, so check the temperature regularly and move the pot out of intense sun if it begins to overheat. Once seedlings emerge, they can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures.
Step 7 — Label Your Pot
Use one of the botanical plant markers to identify the seeds and keep track of their progress.
05 — GERMINATION: WHAT TO EXPECT
Germination: What to Expect
Dwarf Umbrella Tree seeds can take a couple of months or longer to germinate. The timing varies with seed condition and growing conditions.
While you wait, keep the growing medium warm and moist, provide suitable light, and make sure the propagation bag allows airflow. Avoid disturbing the seeds unnecessarily.
Patience Is Part of the Journey
A slow start does not automatically mean the seeds have failed. Continue checking the growing conditions and allow enough time for germination. Not every seed is guaranteed to sprout.
06 — CARING FOR YOUR FIRST SEEDLINGS
Caring for Your First Seedlings
Once the first shoots appear, focus on healthy early growth and gentle handling.
Separate Seedlings Carefully
If several seedlings grow close together, separate them into individual pots after they sprout and once they are strong enough to tolerate the disturbance. Handle the young roots gently.
Gradually Remove the Propagation Bag
Increase ventilation as seedlings emerge and establish. Remove the bag progressively rather than keeping young plants enclosed indefinitely.
Provide Suitable Light
Keep seedlings in a bright location. Our general growing guidance recommends 8–12 hours of light daily, with a suitable grow light as an alternative or supplement. Monitor the covered pot to prevent excessive heat build-up.
Water Consistently
Keep the growing medium moist and do not allow it to dry out completely. Check it regularly and allow excess water to drain away; watering frequency will vary with the season and your growing conditions.
07 — FROM SEEDLING TO YOUNG TREE
From Seedling to Young Tree
As your Dwarf Umbrella Tree develops, give it time to build a healthy root system, trunk, and foliage before focusing on its miniature form.
When to Consider Repotting
Our species-specific guidance recommends repotting seedlings when they reach approximately 15cm in height, usually towards the end of the next growing season. Treat this as a guide and assess the seedling’s strength and root development before moving it.
Handle roots carefully when transplanting. Dwarf Umbrella Tree roots are fleshy and can break easily. Prioritise healthy, steady growth before beginning advanced bonsai training.
08 — LONG-TERM CARE
Long-Term Care
Light and Location
Dwarf Umbrella Tree tolerates low to moderate light and relatively dry indoor air. For healthy growth, provide the best available light and avoid abrupt environmental changes where possible.
Watering
Keep the growing medium moist and do not allow it to dry out completely. In winter, water more cautiously, but ensure the root ball does not dry out—especially if the tree is positioned above a heating device. Do not leave the pot standing in water.
Repotting
For an established Dwarf Umbrella bonsai, repot every two years in spring using a standard bonsai soil mix. Handle the fleshy roots gently, as they can break easily. If your tree is still a young seedling, assess its growth and root development before repotting rather than following a fixed schedule.
Feeding
Feed your established Dwarf Umbrella bonsai with a low-nitrogen liquid bonsai fertiliser every two weeks during the growing season, usually from spring through autumn. Stop feeding in winter, and avoid excess nitrogen, which can lead to larger leaves.
Your kit includes Seaweed Extract, FUZICO+, and NPK 20-20-20. These products are not automatically interchangeable with the low-nitrogen bonsai feed described above. Do not apply treatments to newly sown seeds or young seedlings unless the relevant product instructions specifically allow it. Once the plant is established and actively growing, follow each product’s label for its intended use and dilution.
Pruning and Wiring
A new shoot generally grows in the direction of the leaf directly below a pruning cut. On a healthy, established tree, careful pruning can encourage additional shoots and finer branching. Leaf removal is an advanced technique and should not be performed on seedlings.
Dwarf Umbrella Tree does not produce hard wood, and its trunks and branches can snap if bent too strongly. Younger shoots are more flexible, but wire and shape them carefully and check regularly to avoid damage.
For more detailed guidance on pruning, shaping, and the safe use of your bonsai training wire, refer to “When to Begin Bonsai Training” in the main The Bonsai Journey™ Growing Guide.
Keep It Away from Children and Pets
Dwarf Umbrella Tree contains compounds that may be harmful if ingested. Keep the plant, seeds, plant treatments, and tools out of reach of young children and pets.
