How to Grow Weeping Fig from Seed
Ficus benjamina
From a tiny seed to a tree of your own.
01 — MEET YOUR TREE
Meet Your Tree
The Weeping Fig (Ficus benjamina) is known for its glossy foliage and naturally drooping branches, which create an elegant, flowing silhouette. Native to India, Southeast Asia, the Southwest Pacific, and northern Australia, it can reach 40–50 feet in nature.
Although it is a popular indoor ornamental plant, the Weeping Fig is sensitive to changes in its surroundings. Moving it from one location to another may cause stress and leaf drop, so a stable growing environment is important.
Growing one from seed is a slow, rewarding process. Give your tree time to develop, and enjoy each stage of its journey.
02 — BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Before You Begin
Prepare the following:
- Weeping Fig seeds
- A biodegradable peat pot or seedling tray
- A standard seed-starting growing medium with perlite
- Water for watering after sowing and maintaining moisture
- A transparent propagation bag
- A botanical plant marker
Your Bonsai Journey™ kit also includes planting tools and plant treatments for later stages of growth.
Choose the Right Growing Medium
For sowing, use a standard seed-growing mixture with perlite. The company guide recommends this type of medium for seeds rather than specialist bonsai soil, which is more suitable for mature trees and repotting.
Your cocopeat block can be used as part of a suitable growing medium, but cocopeat alone is not a complete, nutrient-rich seed-starting mix.
03 — PREPARE YOUR SEEDS
Prepare Your Seeds
Weeping Fig seeds do not require cold stratification. The company’s species-specific instructions do not call for a warm-water soak or another pre-treatment before sowing.
Step 1 — Prepare the Growing Medium
Moisten your seed-starting mixture so it is ready to receive the seeds. Use a container that allows excess water to drain.
Step 2 — Keep the Seeds Ready to Sow
Once your pot and growing medium are prepared, you can sow the seeds directly onto the surface. There is no cold-treatment stage to complete first.
A Note on Seed Treatments
The company’s guide describes warm treatment and scarification as techniques that may be needed for certain species. It does not recommend either treatment specifically for Weeping Fig, so do not add these steps to this seed’s preparation routine.
04 — PLANT YOUR SEEDS
Plant Your Seeds
Step 1 — Fill Your Pot
Fill your peat pot or seedling tray with the prepared seed-starting mixture. Level the surface gently without compacting it firmly.
Step 2 — Sow the Seeds
Place the seeds on top of the growing medium, spacing them out as much as possible so their roots are less likely to become entangled.
Cover the seeds with a thin layer of growing medium, approximately 5 mm deep.
Step 3 — Water Thoroughly
Water the container as soon as you have sown the seeds. Continue until the growing medium is saturated and water begins to drain from the container.
Step 4 — Add the Propagation Bag
Place a transparent propagation bag over the pot to help increase humidity. Make several small air holes in the sides of the bag to allow airflow.
Check the medium regularly and keep it moist without leaving the container standing in water.
Step 5 — Provide Warmth and Light
Place the container in a warm location with plenty of direct sunlight, or in a greenhouse. The company’s general growing guidance recommends 20–30°C for germination and 8–12 hours of direct sunlight daily. A specialist growing lamp can be used as an alternative or to supplement natural light.
Once the seeds sprout, seedlings can thrive at slightly lower temperatures.
05 — GERMINATION: WHAT TO EXPECT
Germination: What to Expect
Weeping Fig seeds can take a couple of months or longer to germinate. The time varies with the seed and the growing conditions, including light, temperature, moisture, and the growing medium.
Keep the medium warm and moist, and do not let it dry out. Check it regularly, but avoid disturbing the seeds while you wait.
Patience Is Part of the Journey
If your seeds have not sprouted yet, do not assume they have failed. Review the growing conditions and allow sufficient time. Germination is a natural process, and success cannot be guaranteed for every seed.
06 — CARING FOR YOUR FIRST SEEDLINGS
Caring for Your First Seedlings
Once the seedlings emerge, continue giving them suitable light, moisture, and warmth while they become established.
Gradually Remove the Propagation Bag
Keep the bag ventilated with air holes while it is in use. As the seedlings emerge and become stronger, gradually increase their exposure to the surrounding air rather than keeping them enclosed indefinitely.
Provide Plenty of Light
The company’s general guide recommends aiming for 8–12 hours of direct sunlight each day, with specialist artificial growing lamps as an alternative or supplement. Once seedlings have sprouted, they can thrive at slightly lower temperatures than those used for germination.
Keep the Growing Medium Moist
Keep the medium warm and moist, and prevent it from drying out. How often you need to water depends on the season and your local conditions; check the medium rather than following a fixed daily schedule.
Separate Seedlings Carefully
If multiple seedlings sprout close together, separate them into individual pots once they are strong enough to withstand the disturbance. Handle the young plants gently to reduce root damage.
07 — FROM SEEDLING TO YOUNG TREE
From Seedling to Young Tree
Continue to provide your young Weeping Fig with good light, consistent moisture, and warmth. The company guide notes that this species grows relatively slowly compared with other Ficus plants, so give it time to establish.
When to Consider Repotting
The company’s species-specific instructions recommend repotting seedlings when they reach approximately 15 cm in height, usually towards the end of the next growing season.
As the plant grows, choose a suitable container and avoid unnecessary root disturbance. Let the seedling develop into a healthy young tree before beginning more advanced bonsai training.
08 — LONG-TERM CARE
Long-Term Care
Light and Temperature
Weeping Fig thrives in warm conditions and is sensitive to cold. Protect it from frost and cold temperatures. Provide good light, using a growing lamp if needed to supplement natural sunlight.
Watering
Keep the tree steadily moist and maintain a consistent watering routine. Do not allow the pot to sit in water, as this can contribute to leaf drop and root rot.
Choosing a Location
Weeping Fig does not like being disturbed. Once it has adapted to its location, avoid moving it unnecessarily; a change of surroundings can stress the tree and cause it to drop leaves.
Feeding
The company guide describes Ficus trees as heavy feeders that need fertiliser throughout the growing season. Your Bonsai Journey™ kit includes Seaweed Extract, FUZICO+, and NPK 20-20-20 for later plant care.
Do not apply these treatments to newly sown seeds unless the relevant product instructions specifically recommend it. Begin feeding only once the seedling is established and actively growing, and follow each product’s recommended dilution.
Repotting
The company guide advises being prepared to repot annually in most circumstances, depending on growth and how the tree is being grown. Watch your plant’s growth and condition to help determine when it needs more space.
Pruning and Maintenance
The company guide recommends pruning when the tree is no longer actively growing. Ficus trees are usually most active in spring and summer, with growth slowing in autumn and dormancy occurring in winter.
Remove dead branches and dead leaves whenever needed to help prevent disease or fungal infections.
For detailed guidance on pruning, branch selection, shaping, and the safe use of your 1 mm bonsai training wire, refer to the “When to Begin Bonsai Training” section in the main The Bonsai Journey™ Growing Guide. Allow your tree to establish healthy growth before beginning advanced techniques.
09 — FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
