Air plants symbolize freedom and creativity.
The Air Plant has a unique shape to it and its color breathes life into any room. Because of their ability to thrive out of the soil, they also represent freedom and are great for people who live to move frequently or travel.
Airplant, or Tillandsia stricta, was named after the botanist and physician, Dr. Elias Tillandz. The specific epithet means straight or rigid, because the plant’s leaves are stiff and straight. These small plants receive their common name, airplant, because they receive most of their nutrients from the air around them.
AirPlant: Feng shui translates to “Wind and Water,” so it's no surprise that an air plant is a perfect representation of those two elements combined.
☘ Tillandsia AirPlants are members of the Bromeliad family which makes them close cousins to pineapples.
☘ AirPlants use trichomes to absorb nutrients and moisture from the air.
☘ Air plants grow offsets ‘pups’ after blooming. The mother plant will often die after producing pups.
☘ Tillandsia plants are found in many climates and environments from humid rainforests, high cloud forests, deserts, coasts, and mountain sides. Because they are found in such diverse climates, they have adapted to thrive in these sometimes harsh environments.
☘ Most air plants don’t bloom flowers that are scented. Though there are a few that do have scented flowers and produce some of the most delicate scents like the citrus blooms of the T. diaguitensis , and the nutmeg scent produced by the Tillandsia cyanea.
☘ One of the most popular air plants, the T. xerographica was almost poached to extinction in the 1980s. Since then, growers and exporters have had to adhere to strict regulations for the export and trade of these plants.
☘ AirPlants are perfect plants to display in your bedroom because they photosynthesize at night. So while you are sleeping, they emit fresh oxygen into the air. Being among plants can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve focus at home or work.
